Sardinia's Mine

Classic specimens from Sardinia

A complete list of all the minerals from this island is very difficult since the large quantity and quality of the specimens that this island has furnished in the past, when the mine activity was at its best , and even later when the mineralogical passion was more widespread.

For this reason here below we will limit ourselves to the main minerals that are most relevant for quality or rarity respect to the other worldwide localities.

Fosgenite from Monteponi:  most probably is the most representative classic mineral of this island, found in exceptional champions for brilliance and dimensions, in  the deepest levels of the lead mine of Monteponi.

Blue Fluorites of Santa Lucia :  found in a single pocket of the mine they represent a unique finding in terms  of beauty with deep blue transparent cubes of fluorite with some inclusions of pyrite that resemble a blue sky with the stars in the night.

Amethysts of Osilo  : in the past specimens with an intense purple color and optimal transparency have been extracted, of absolute international level .

Aragonite : normally related to carsic activity , they have been found in caves that have been intersected by the mine galleries . The most famous are the light blue aragonites that have been found in the San Giovanni Mine.

Barytes : this mineral is very common in the south area of the island in mines, in outcrops and even in some caves. The most famous are probably the green barites from the Barbusi cave, the chisel shaped yellow barites from Barbusi, found in specimens of more than 30 cm.

Cerussites of Montevecchio: in this mine some exceptional reticulated and fasciculated crystals of more than 15 cm have been found.

Green anglesites of Montevecchio: a real rarity, this is the unique locality worlwide that has furnished such transparent intense green crystals.

Chabasites ( Facolite ) and Epistilbites of  Osilo: very close to the city there is a limited outcrop where you can find in the basaltic rock vugs centimetric crystals of red Epistilbite and yellow Cabasite, var. Facolite.

The Silver minerals of Sarrabus: the native Silver, argentite and Ullmanite specimens of this locality, whose mining activity was very active at the end of the XIX century  are in the most important mineralogical museums of the world.
